GRAND LAKE COVE CLOSED FOR FUEL SPILL CLEANUP
Sep 22, 2023
The Grand River Dam Authority Police Department is making the public aware that a cove on Grand Lake, containing the Monkey Island Marina, on the east side of Monkey Island, is being closed temporarily so that remediation of a diesel spill can be completed. GRDA anticipates the cove will remain closed through the weekend (September 24).
According to GRDA Police, a 50-foot yacht docked in the cove sank Wednesday evening, September 20. As a result, a large amount of diesel fuel leaked into the water. GRDA responded to the scene and deployed containment booms across the cove entrance. Booms have also been deployed around the sunken vessel. The spill was contained within the cove and environmental response crews will be onsite Thursday afternoon to continue the cleanup.
GRDA is asking boat traffic to stay clear of the area and any crews that still may be working in the cove, until the effort is completed.
