GRDA Statement on Southwest Power Pool Energy Emergency Alert (EEA) Level 2 Declaration
Feb 15, 2021
This morning the Grand River Dam Authority received notification that the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), the electric balancing market for a 17-state region, would be declaring and Energy Emergency Alert (EEA) Level 2, effective at 7:22 a.m. central time today, February 15th.
An EEA Level 2 requires SPP to direct its member companies to issue public conservation appeals. This EEA2 alert will remain in effect until further notice to mitigate the risk of more widespread and longer-lasting outages. Some conservation recommendations for customers are as follows:
- Turn down thermostats to 68 degrees.
- Close shades and blinds to reduce the amount of heat lost through windows.
- Turn off and unplug non‐essential lights and appliances. Avoid using large appliances.
- Businesses should minimize the use of electric lighting and electricity‐consuming equipment.
- Large consumers of electricity should consider shutting down or reducing non‐essential production.
An EEA2 is the second of three EEA levels. An EEA3 would be triggered if SPP has to utilize operating reserves below the required minimum or ask our members to implement controlled service interruptions.
Operating conditions may continue to tighten over the next several days because of widespread and extreme cold. Attached you will find the SPP press release with information about our continued response to this widespread and extreme cold weather event.
