Space Heater Safety

Space heater safety … With extremely cold weather moving in this week, GRDA is once again sharing some important safety tips for space heaters.
While Oklahoma winters can move the temperatures up and down the thermometer from one day to the next, many people find that using space heaters is a quick, convenient way to hold off the chill when necessary. However, space heaters, when not used properly, can pose both a fire and electric shock hazard.
Safety should always be a priority if you are planning to use a space heater. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when selecting and using a space heater in your home:
- Make sure the heater you are using is properly labeled, showing that is has been listed with a recognized testing laboratory.
- Before use, familiarize yourself with all operating instructions and warning labels provided by the manufacturer.
- Also, before using, inspect the heater. Are the cord and plugs in good shape? If anything is frayed, worn or damaged, do not use the heater.
- Never leave a space heater unattended. Turn it off when you leave the room or are going to sleep. Keep pets and children well clear of the heater as well.
- Also, always keep the space heater at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including papers, clothing, and rugs.
- Do not place the heater in a high traffic area where they may pose a tripping hazard.
- Never plug space heaters into an extension cord. Plug them directly into the wall outlet and do not plug any other electric device into the same outlet as the heater.
- Place space heaters on level, flat surfaces. Never place heaters on cabinets, tables, furniture, or carpet, which can overheat and start a fire.
- Always unplug and safely store the heater when it is not in use.
