Boat safe, smart, and sober during Labor Day outings

Sep 01, 2022

Headed out to the lake or river the Labor Day holiday? If so, the Grand River Dam Authority Police Department wants to remind you of boating and floating safety tips that can help promote safe outings on the water.

With the Labor Day holiday right around the corner, many people are planning to spend the long weekend on the water. For those heading to the scenic Illinois River, Grand Lake or Lake Hudson, the Grand River Dam Authority Police Department is sharing some important safety tips that can help promote safe outings.

While visitors are encouraged to practice safe social distancing, they also are encouraged to practice safety on the water by wearing a life jacket. According to the United States Coast Guard, drowning is the cause of three-fourths of all boating fatalities, and among those fatalities 85 percent of the victims were not wearing life jackets.

“We encourage everyone to come out and have a great time on the water, as they celebrate Labor Day weekend,” said GRDA Corporate Spokesperson Justin Alberty. “We just want them to do it in a safe manner. Be mindful of others, use common sense on the water and always wear those life jackets.”

Here are some important “DOs and DON’Ts” to keep in mind whenever you visit the water:

If you have an emergency on the water, call 911. For information about the GRDA Police Department or how an officer can assist you in a non-emergency situation, contact the department at (918) 256-0911 or visit www.grda.com.
